That beauty right there is an Audi A4 Avant as alot of you may already know. You also know that for over 10 years now the SUV, crossover and CUV game has all but killed wagons. There are very few wagon options left with the Germans selling the most of them. I think the next few years we are going to see the wagon go away entirely, with the Germans eventually pulling them out of the US lineup and keeping them in Europe. I knew that wagons were done for when I found out that the Buick Encore/Chevy Trax twins were based on the Sonic. So do you guys think wagons are really going to be done for now, or is there still some hope left?

Nah, somebody on Oppo just spotted A6 Avant mules and the JSW, GSW and Allroad are all selling like crazy where I live.

If they do go, they’ll be back eventually. Automotive tastes will gradually drift back to them.

Most important? I’d say not.

I see at least three a day in DC.

Might wanna double check on that.

Hopefully those 3 you see aren't the same ones.

How is it the most important car market though?

And the three I see daily are completely different ones, owned by completely different people.

Nope, but they may only be in the luxury segment where variety is what keeps market share. Mercedes, BMW, and Audi will keep them coming in. Volvo is as devoted to the V-range as the Germans are to the 4-door coupe. Near premium groups can get away with it too, namely Volkswagen and Alfa Romeo (if they actually come).

Those that like wagons tend to like diesels as well, so expect most future wagons to be the diesel offerings of the brands. So pretty much, people that want a very European vehicle, and completely different from anything else, plus have the cash, will have mid-sized wagons availible to order. Wagons will be a sign of wealth soon, how the world has changed.

Don’t know if that’s new car registrations though.

Well its influential and important from a cultural and economic standpoint. Alot of automotive stuff came from here. Not only that, alot if not most car companies have some kind of either design center, tech center, or headquarters here. Also compared to other parts of the country Ive been in, if you want to see alot of special edition models or cars you just read about in the Mags, just drive around daily in LA or prowl the freeways, especially on the weekends. Your bound to see something special. Its also a major market for alot of specific models from a few makes.

I think I’ll call up Subaru and see if they think the wagon is close to extinction. (That’s a very nice looking a6 avant btw.)

True true, but those are all niches and low volume except the Jetta. The TSX is gone. No one ever really sees the German wagons. If you do see something wagon from the Germans its a stupid ass X1 or X3 or something. Volvo is still small time and Subaru sells, but they dont have a following large enough in my opinion to save wagons. They are just the SUV alternative.

Wagons are still super popular, it’s just that their styling has changed to mimic SUV’s and we call them crossovers now.

It’s all because we’re still on the tail end of “station wagon” being the car of boring housewives, so they got a rebranding.

They will always be popular in Europe, meaning that manufacturers will keep building them. When a manufacturer already has a wagon version of a sedan/hatch that’s available in the US it’s relatively simple/cheap to introduce that wagon as well.

Besides, fuel prices will rise and trends will shift. The bloatmobiles will go out of fashion eventually and wagons will make a resurgence as they’re generally more rational vehicles than similar sedans or CUVs.
